It all depends on the level of funny. Won't go into detail for the higher and unsafe levels of laughter but lmfao is for something REALLY funny and lmao is for when it's funny, tho lol has many roles like when something is mildly funny, for forced smiling, or for idk sarcastic remarks n stuff when something is meant jokingly.
