Is it just me or is Ferdinand’s character showing more darkness? Or callousness? He isn’t that “different from other nobles”. I don’t like how he keeps manipulating her for his own benefit.
This artist draws him a bit evil, but no, he's absolutely not a bad person (universal pragmatist/misanthrope? yes). Ferdinand has never forced Rozemyne to do anything against her will, and he doesn't have to. He does not corruptly manipulate her---he educates her and lets her understand her options. She has always been given a choice, and there is always an underlying reason for it (even if the ultimatum is do or die, but that's not on Ferdinand, it's the society). Does Ferdinand and the duchy benefit from her presence? Of course, but that's merely a tradeoff with terms for the both of them. The reality is he's guiding her so she doesn't die, and can live with more options for her future. The things he has her do are also all for her own benefit, and she knows this. His character is complex. He's very well-meaning, but easily misunderstood.
